We techies have all been there. You are visiting friends and they ask you what you do for a living. When you explain it, you see the dazzle in the eyes of the listeners. We at Calendar42 are on a mission to make planning obsolete. We make lives easier and we make doing business easier. How we do that? When the story behind the solutions is quite difficult and full of professional lingo, can’t magic just be magic? And a towel just a towel?
You probably thought your plea was quite clear, peers in your business would have thought so. But the thing is, your customers are not your peers. So, how do you explain what your magic is?
“Technology is stuff that doesn’t work yet” – Douglas Adams
Technology is not a goal as such, but an instrument that can, if you play it right, get you there. Even in a conservative market, with a complicated story and an ambitious goal. In our journey we translate technology into stuff that does work. We chose planning and mobility as our core areas for two reasons. On the one hand it is crucially tied up in everyone’s daily live, but still, on the other hand, it is lagging behind in today’s possibilities. We focus on creating these opportunities and helping businesses optimise their performance. To realise that, telling an awesome story doesn’t suffice. You need to breath it, to live it.
We are no marketers. We are a bunch of tech-savvy people who are passionate about their mission and excited about the challenging adventures they encounter. The road that will lead to our goals is rough and unpredictable. How we manage this? All it takes to master this wild stream is transparency. One of the values in our moral compass says: ‘We are open’. That is what we solemnly believe in. From unlocking open data and using open source technology, to being open about our business case, our processes and the possibilities.
Metaphorically you can compare our company and the C42 platform with the great practical, multifunctional value of a towel:
“You can use it to sail, wrap it around you for warmth, sleep under it beneath the stars, wet it for use in hand-to-hand combat and wave it in emergencies as a distress signal. And if it is still clean…you may use the towel to dry off.” – Douglas Adams
Douglas Adams was the author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Tech people and science fiction always have had some kind of attractive force. It is probably the same magic as children experience with fairy tales. But while reading the books you will stumble upon quite a few wise truths between the lines. Since we develop solutions on our platform that addresses matters as for instance travel information, ridesharing and on demand expertise planning, we can relate to it. We always carry a towel. That’s how we make sure our customers are prepared for all plausible situations our solutions can cover.
“For some reason, if a strag (strag: non-hitch hiker) discovers that a hitchhiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, face flannel, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet weather gear, space suit etc., etc.”
Aren’t we all influenced, enabled and inspired by our environment? The trick is not to get overwhelmed by difficult obstacles and apparent impassable passages. Don’t panic.
“Secondly: Anyone who can travel the length and breadth of the Galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against all odds, win through and still knows where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with.”
Recently we won the ‘Marketing with balls award’. We are proud that we have succeeded in inspiring people on how technology can empower people and boost businesses with nothing else than enthusiasm, a different mind-set, and a not so common story.
We are good with technology, but won’t bother to fatigue with a dull technical elaboration. We have put our magic into the C42 mobility & planning platform. We think that almost any planning or mobility issue is solvable. Maybe not on our own, but that’s why we love to team up. Internally, but also in the form of partnerships with others. Synergy is another kind of magic. Every cool and sustainable project deserves a powerful and reliable crew in its rafting boat to steer towards its horizon. Don’t panic, one thing is for sure…
We will always carry a towel.
